Assists the surgeon in the Operating Room and provides aid in exposure, hemostasis and other technical functions during surgery. Ability to provide appropriate care for patients of all ages (birth to adulthood). Provides appropriate care pre and post-op under the direction of the surgeon.
Diverse Surgical specialties including general, thoracic, vascular, neurosurgery, orthopedic, bariatric, ENT, urology, GYN, and colorectal.
The floor PA participates in:
-AM/ PM rounding on surgical patients, consults, and ICU patients either individually/ with the Surgical Attendings
-Review /Documentation/Interpretation/ Ordering of labs and studies
-Discussion and treatment plan with the Surgical Attending
-Management of any / all issues involving patient management on the floors
-NGT insertion/ removal, chest tube removal, surgical drain/ ostomy care, wound care, wound vac care, doppler
-Post operative checks
-Surgical consults and ED admission (H&Ps, admitting orders, etc.).
-Ambulatory surgery coverage- pre-operative evaluation, discharges, medication reconciliation etc.
-Discharge Paperwork, medication reconciliation, and discharge summaries
-Depending on OR needs, may also be asked to help cover OR cases throughout the day
The operating PA participates in:
-First assisting in the majority of cases
-Second assisting on orthopedic total joint patients
-Training for the Da Vinci Xi (newest version) robotic cases
-Pre-operative patient interviews with appropriate medical/ surgical clearance
-Patient preparation in the operating room (helping move, secure, and prep the patient)
-Review of necessary equipment needed for the surgical case at hand
-Uploading images through Epic for intra-op utilization
B.S.,P.A. (N.C.C.P.A.) National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant, Inc.
1-3 years experience (1 year surgical experience and or surgical fellowship training)
Licensed in CT, DEA CT and PA certification
Knowledge in tissue handling technique, knot-tying hemostasis techniques andappropriate use of instruments
Standing/walking at least half the day and occasionally working in awkward positions while holding retractors when assisting and supporting extremities. Helping lift heavy objects ten (10) to twenty (20) pounds and assisting with moving of patients ranging from one hundred (100) to three hundred (400) pounds. Moderate stress related to patient care.
